Funder finder: who paid nonprofits like yours

Find your nonprofit in the IRS list. You get the foundations that paid similar nonprofits in your state, with typical grant sizes. It is free.

From 9.7 million grants that 172,144 funders reported to the IRS for 2022 to 2025.

How this list is made

Foundations and charities report every grant they pay on IRS Form 990 Schedule I or Form 990-PF. GrantParty matches each recipient to its IRS record, which gives its state, its NTEE code (the IRS cause code) and its revenue.

Your peers are the 500 nonprofits in your state with the same NTEE code whose budgets are closest to yours, and never more than five times yours. Funders are ranked by how many of those peers they paid in the last four tax years. Donor-advised fund sponsors are left out, because they have no program to apply to.

Questions people ask

How does the funder finder pick "nonprofits like yours"?

It starts from your IRS record: your state, your NTEE code (the IRS cause code) and your revenue. Peers are other nonprofits in your state with the same code and a comparable budget. If fewer than five of them received grants, it widens to your cause group in the state, then to the same code nationwide.

Which years does it cover?

Grants reported for the last four tax years. Foundations file their returns months after their year ends, so the newest year is usually incomplete.

Does a funder on this list accept applications?

Not always. Some foundations only give to groups they choose. Open the funder's website from the list and read its guidelines before you reach out.

Why are some big names missing?

Donor-advised fund sponsors, such as Fidelity Charitable, pass along gifts that individual donors choose. They have no program to apply to, so the finder leaves them out.
